New update to the Affliction card

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort (16-8) is the latest addition to the star-studded Affliction MMA promotion debut, taking on Terry Martin in a middleweight bout at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on July 19.

“The Phenom” earned the 205-pound strap with a 49-second technical knockout (cut) of Randy Couture at UFC 46: “Supernatural” back in 2004. There was an immediate rematch and Belfort survived Couture’s onslaught for three rounds until the ringside doctor called a halt to the action in the final frame at UFC 49: “Unfinished Business.”

He went on to lose his next bout to Tito Ortiz via split decision at UFC 51: “Super Saturday” and eventually worked his way overseas to compete under the Pride FC banner. He dropped two of three bouts, including a unanimous decision loss to Dan Henderson at PRIDE 32: “The Real Deal.”

In the wake of the defeat, Belfort tested positive for banned anabolic steroid known 4-hydroxytestosterone (he claimed it was an over the counter supplement) and the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) suspended him for nine months and levied a $10,000 fine.

The Brazilian competed six months later in a Cage Rage event, which is a big no-no when it comes to licensure here in the United States – he was supposed to honor that ruling. Therefore, it is interesting that he has been announced for the California card.

Meanwhile, Martin is out to prove that he is among the best 185-pound fighters despite back-to-back losses inside the Octagon. He will look to rebound this weekend against Daiju Takase on the first-ever Adrenaline MMA card set for the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., on June 14.

He has also kept busy on the boxing circuit, knocking out Ricardo Upchurch in his professional debut in a cruiserweight bout back in April.

Martin will certainly have his hands full with Belfort, who is making his debut at 185 pounds. But he possesses knockout power in both fists, which can come into play at anytime.

Affliction MMA features the showdown between Fedor Emilianenko and Tim Sylvia, as well as other heavyweight clashes between Josh Barnett and Pedro Rizzo and Andrei Arklovski and Ben Rothwell.

The card is absolutely loaded … check it out on pay-per-view (PPV) on Saturday, July 19.

Is Gina Carano ready for the real deal, or has she been blinded by the lime light

http://mmamania.com/2008/05/29/gina-carano-vs-kaitlin-young-elite-xc-on-cbs-fight-preview/

Elite XC “Saturday Night Fights” is set to go off live from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., this Saturday, May 31 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. To get us prepared for the historic event, we plan to showcase a daily feature for each main card fight leading up to the historic mixed martial arts debut on network television. These features will include information on the fighters, predictions, as well as training notes and quotes from each fighter.

The third fight set for the historic Elite XC mixed martial arts event on the CBS broadcast this Saturday is the only woman’s match on the card — Gina Carano (5-0) vs. Kaitlin Young (4-1).

Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw has recently revealed his plans to create an Elite XC woman’s championship belt by the end of this year. He has also been quoted saying this fight would determine one of the competitors in the first-ever woman’s championship match.

Here’s a little background on each fighter:

Gina Carano — Gina is the most recognized female fighter in the world right now. Her combination of good looks and certifiable talent makes her an easy face to remember … and market.

In fact, she’s been able to parlay the combination into a role on NBC’s American Gladiators as “Crush.” The show was successful enough to be brought back for a second season.

As far as her fighting credentials, she’s been fighting professionally in mixed martial arts for less than two years. However, her successful Muay Thai and kickboxing background have transitioned very well to the sport, as she’s undefeated including back-to-back wins inside the Elite XC cage.

Carano was a part of the first woman’s MMA match ever sanctioned in Nevada against Rosi Sexton, as well as the first Elite XC female match against Julie Kedzie. It only makes sense she be a part of the first female fight on network television.

Kaitlin Young — Kaitlin is a 22-year-old mixed martial arts fighter out of Circle Pines, Minn., and full-time student at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where she majors in Kinesiology.

She has a Muay Thai and kickboxing background as well, and has trained extensively in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and wrestling since making the transition to mixed martial arts in October of last year.

Young won her debut with a second round technical over Lindsey Frandrop. A month later she competed in a Hook n Shoot tournament, during which she defeated three other women in one night — all by first round knockouts.

Riding high on the impressive tournament win, she took on Sara Schneider in a February BoDog Fight event. Kaitlin, however, fell victim to a late second round armbar in that fight, but her showing combined with the dominance in the Hook n Shoot tournament was still enough to earn her a spot in the first ever woman’s MMA fight on CBS.

Training notes and quotes:

Gina Carano — Carano trains in Las Vegas, Nevada, out of the Extreme Couture camp. Randy Couture is known for designing great game plans for fights and has turned to passing on his knowledge for now while he waits for another chance to fight. There are now six Extreme Couture gyms in the United States.

Notable fighters and instructors out of Extreme Couture are Forrest Griffin, Tyson Griffin, Karo Parisyan, Martin Kampmann, and Gray Maynard among others.

Gina has admitted recently that she hasn’t been able to devote the amount of time and energy she would have liked into training for this fight with Young.

Here’s a quote:

“My training has been pumped up for the last two weeks. I had a little side shot with ‘American Gladiators” so we’re going to see how I perform with this crunch-time training. I wish I would have had nine weeks completely to focus on it like Kaitlin. But there’s not going to be any excuses. I just chose to do ‘American Gladiators’ and take my time away from it. So am I concerned? No. I feel more mentally clear than I’ve probably ever felt in my life. I think I’m good. I think I’m confident. I’ve got the next two weeks to kind of sharpen everything up and I’m ready to fight.”

And when she was asked to make a prediction:

“I think this fight could go either way and I’m planning it on favoring me. But we’re pretty equal in our stand up. I’m expecting a pretty equal match up. As soon as I get in that cage with her then I’ll be able to kind of gauge where we’re at.”

Hopefully for Carano, it’s not a case of too little too late.

Kaitlin Young — Kaitlin trains out of Minnesota Martial Arts Academy in Brooklyn Center, Minn. The gym was founded in 1992 by ex-collegiate wrestler, Greg Nelson. Some notable fighters out of this camp are former UFC lightweight champ Sean Sherk, UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar, Nick Thompson, Derrick Noble and Brock Larson.

Everybody remembers Sean Sherk’s insane workout on “All Access.” If that’s anything close to the way Kaitlin Young is working to get ready for this fight, Gina Carano might be in trouble.

In fact, see for yourself, here’s a link to a video of Kaitlin doing what she calls her “Cave Man” training routine:

Matt Hughes and Mark Hughes might both be fighting on UFC 85

This would be AWESOME

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=6370&zoneid=2

It has been more than eight years since former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes and twin brother Mark have competed in mixed martial arts at the same event. That era, however, may soon come to an end.

Matt, in a pre-fight media conference call for UFC 85 on Thursday, was posed a question he didn’t expect, that being about the possibility of his brother returning to the Octagon.

“This is an unexpected question,” said Matt, the elder brother – by five minutes – of the Hughes twins. “I do know that Mark is going to sign a contract with the UFC where he won't compete for anybody else. And that'd be right here coming up. That's all I can really tell you. That's all I can really comment on,”

Mark sports a 6-2 professional record in MMA, including a win at UFC 28, but hasn’t competed in nearly five years. Apparently poised for a return, Matt says that Mark doesn’t have a fight lined up yet, but is adamant about his return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a place Matt has called home for several years.

“There's no fight scheduled (for Mark), but he is going to sign a contract with the UFC to fight for them and nobody else."

Of course, with the twin brothers under contract, the obvious question is if they will compete on an upcoming fight card together. On that issue, Matt was less certain.

While he indicated that he would like to fight on the same event as his brother, Matt said, “To be honest, we tried that in the past with the old owners and they just never went for it. But that's been six, seven years ago probably. So, we'll just see what comes out of it. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't. Hopefully if it does, it'll be in the Midwest there somewhere.”

With the sport now under sanctioning across most of the United States, including Illinois and Missouri, there has been speculation that the UFC will soon operate an event in either Chicago or St. Louis. So it appears that Matt’s hopes of fighting in the Midwest, with his brother, has now become a distinct possibility.

Last nights T.U.F recap

http://mmamania.com/2008/05/28/the-ultimate-fighter-7-episode-9-recap-and-discussion/

It’s quarterfinal time and Forrest has to decide who to corner since the first round is teammate vs teammate (blame Forrest for going 6-2 in the preliminary matches) but he can’t / won’t decide so it comes down to the science of the coin toss.

Two will stay at home and train with the rest of Team Brown and two will be cast aside like flotsam and jetsam.

One flick later and it’s official: Forrest corners Jesse Taylor and Amir Sadollah and Rampage is stuck with Dante Rivera and Matt Brown.

Back at the house Jesse gets his White Castle on and sucks down a few sliders to show off his nutritional expertise. They guys hate on him for eating like he’s going to the chair yet has a body like he’s going to the beach.

Dante feels like he’s improved since his last fight and looks to come out with a better showing against Jesse Taylor. Meanwhile, Coach Rampage is so committed to the new additions that he takes a quick nap during training.

Jesse Taylor is tipping the scales a bit heavy so he puts on a rubber suit and sweats his way to success after a game of full contact ping-pong.

He then rewards himself with a dip in the hot tub. Unfortunately he has to bleed the lines and instead of using a toilet like most normal folks, Ol’ Jesse simply steps out of the jacuzzi and urinates through his shorts onto the pavement.

Not content with being merely repulsive, Taylor graduates to reprehensible by shaking off his leg and jumping right back into the hot tub which has now become a urine cappucino.

An unsuspecting Dante jumps in and bathes in Taylors lemonade. And I thought piss-Christ was offensive. Congratulations Jesse Taylor on replacing Gabe “Colonic” Reudiger as TUF’s most egregious contestant.

Prior to the fight, “Gentleman” Jesse Taylor admits he doesn’t like to touch gloves before engaging but will this time because Dante Rivera is a friend. What a guy.

Quarterfinal fight #1: Jesse Taylor (6-2) vs Dante Rivera (10-2)

Round 1: Rivera swings and misses and Taylor takes him down and immediately rains down hammer fists. Rivera trying to hold him close without much success. Taylor is simply overpowering Rivera who is starting to take punishment. Taylor covering the mouth of Rivera and posturing up and landing. Rinse and repeat. Taylor stands up and eats an upkick and returns to Rivera’s guard. More punishment ensues. Thirty seconds left in the round Taylor seems content to simply smother. Round one ends and it was all Taylor.

Round 2: Dante is busted up and Taylor is sucking wind. In a repeat of round one, Rivera swings and misses and gets taken down. Taylor can be heard grunting as he tries to land punches from the top which is a clear indication that he’s low on fuel. Rampage finally chimes in (someone must have woken him up) and screams at Dante to stand up and do something. He seems content to stay in guard and is saved by the referee (as are we) when he puts them to their feet. Taylor laughs in the face of stand-up and immediately takes him back down. Action has slowed but Taylor is landing periodically. Rivera has no answer and seems resigned to just stay in guard and take punishment. Round two ends just like round one. This one is academic (and anticlimactic).

Jesse Taylor defeats Dante Rivera via unanimous decision.

Not exactly a barnburner but Taylor gets the win and with only one contract that’s all that really matters.

The focus quickly shifts to the second fight of the evening between Matt Brown and Amir Sadollah - who get awfully chummy before the fight. Amir is once again bursting with confidence and considers Matt Brown a trained killer. Rampage likes Matt Brown’s warrior spirit.

Quarterfinal fight #2: Amir Sadollah (0-0) vs Matt Brown (9-6)

Round 1: Brown stalks and lands a couple of punches and kicks. Sadollah with a front kick. Follows with a jab and a knee. They tie up and Sadollah pushes him to the cage. Nice knee to the ribs by Sadollah. Brown looking for the trip but Sadollah fights it off. Nice display of defense by Sadollah. Brown eats an elbow and tries again for the trip. He fails but backs away and sneaks in some strikes. Nice straight head kick by Sadollah. Brown retaliates with a flurry. Back to the cage for both men. Brown still looking for the trip and backs away. Nice jab lands for Brown. Then a left. A Brown low kick stumbles Sadollah. Back to the cage and they exchange knees. They break and trade punches that land. Brown with a takedown but Sadollah rolls out and they get back to their feet. A return to the cage as time expires. Action packed first round. Very close.

Round 2: Brown opens with a hard flurry. Flying White Lotus kick misses for Sadollah. Brown retreats and eats a few. They end up against the cage and wrestle for position. Nice knee by Brown. Missed kick by Sadollah. Brown lands a few more. Sadollah backs him up and trips him down. Sadollah on top now looking to create space. Brown looking a little lethargic on the bottom. Sadollah punches the body. Brown almost has an escape but falls backwards. Sadollah back on top working the elbow. Brown is bushed. Sadollah resorts to a man-hug and Brown rolls out. Amir immediately looks for the armbar but Brown transitions and gets trapped in the triangle. Brown taps.

Amir Sadollah defeats Matt Brown via submission (triangle choke - R2).

After the fight Brown shows a ton of class and congratulates Sadollah for the performance. Brown also gets mad respect when he mans up and admits that while disappointed, he gave it 100% and got bested.

This was an exciting fight and pretty much saved the episode. Anyone who doesn’t understand what was wrong with the fight between Taylor and Rivera should re-watch Brown vs. Sadollah. Kudos to both men for a great fight.

Stay tuned next week as Jeremy May comes back from obscurity to start trouble with Jesse Taylor, CB Dolloway tries to punish Cale Yarbrough, and the semifinal matches are announced.

See you then!

Its confirmed. Tito will no longer be fighting in the UFC

Check out the story at mmaweekly.com. here it is

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=6369&zoneid=2

Speculation has been running rampant for months now about the future of former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz and whether or not he would consider re-signing with the organization following the last fight on his contract against Lyoto Machida at UFC 84.

During an appearance on MMAWeekly Radio Wednesday night, Ortiz says he is “100%” that he will not return to the UFC.

“Me going to somewhere else is 100% happening,” said Ortiz.

Ortiz alluded to his frustration with the president of the UFC, Dana White, as the major factor in the decision, but he admitted he left with a heavy heart when saying goodbye to the fans after his fight last Saturday night.

“Later on after the fight was over, I was sitting down going over the loss, I think that’s when it really touched me that that’s going to be my last time walking out for the UFC,” Ortiz stated. “It’s really hard to say, but the president, the way he treats me, I can’t continue on with them. He’s a monster and I’m going to go elsewhere where they respect me.”

“I’m very thankful for the fans, every one of the fans, I even talked to after and so forth, we’re like ‘we’re going to follow you no matter what Tito, no matter where you go. We’re going to follow you.’ It’s just the fact of getting the greatest fights ahead of me from this point on and continue my career, turn the next chapter in my life.”

It seemed for a moment following the fight between Ortiz and Machida that possibly fences could be mended between the fighter and the promotion, but the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” says his mind is made up.

“No, I’m not going back to the UFC, I don’t want to,” commented the former champion. “I can sleep now and not worry about what’s going to be said about me. I don’t have to worry about what I have to say to make sure I say the right thing. I’m sick of kissing ass and I’m not doing it anymore.”

Following the fight, Ortiz will embark on a three week tour of the country in support of his recently released autobiography, “This is Gonna Hurt.” He will also weigh his options of signing on with an existing promotion or possibly starting his own organization.

While the California native will be unable to attend the upcoming Elite XC show in New Jersey due to family obligations, Ortiz said that he and girlfriend Jenna Jameson will definitely be attending the debut Affliction produced card.

Ortiz stated that he would like to have another fight set up by “September or October” and he’ll be judging promotions on many things including marketing, promotion and various other factors.

“Then it’s time to start plugging away and see what show fits perfect for me,” said Ortiz.

Here is what Jon Koppenhaver wrote in his blog after getting his ass whooped the other night.

So I have pretty much decided that in the next couple of years I am gonna move somewhere LESS CIVILIZED. After all, civilization and LAWS are in place to protect the WEAK anyway. Me being the Alpha Male, Spartan, SAVAGE that I am…I see no need for this type of B.S.

I don’t go around looking for trouble and am in no way a bully. Actually if it were my way I would never have fights outside the ring, just train all day and fuck all night…lol
But when someone needs to be smashed or KILLED I would be more than happy to do it. Like for instance the other night…I was minding my business walking down the street and three drunk guys and two chicks walk by me and talk shit to me. Making fun of my haircut or some lame shit. Instinctively I want to smash their faces in, I mean that’s what they deserve and what nature calls for. But instead I have to let their gf’s make excuses for them so I do nothing and let these faggots feel tough for a night.

Why should I have to be less of a man to protect the rights and lives of lesser men?
Why if I smash all three of their faces do I get arrested and prosecuted and no one asks them WHY THE FUCK THEY WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO HARASS ME IN THE FIRST PLACE!?
As you all know I got in big trouble earlier this year for a similar situation. Same type of thing. I was minding my business and some drunk dude talked shit and I terrorized him. Long story short and 20 grand later I ended up with probation and community service but was warned by the judge that a repeat would earn me prison time. So basically I am now walking on egg shells.

So the plan is to move to the Philippines in the next two years. There the money I make in the UFC will make me very wealthy and there I will not have to hold back when someone deserves to get smashed.

I wont have to be less of a man in order to prevent getting in trouble with the “law”
I will be able to live my life how I want and deserve to live. I will train all day and fuck all night. Maybe one day I will find a wife, if not it’s okay. I will bring my boxing coach and my jiu-jitsu coach with me. Build a team from scratch…this will be a great life. Hopefully before I am 55 I will die in a knife fight outside of some bar. Avoiding the midlife crisis all together.

This is the life of an Alpha Male like me. We are not supposed to grow old and wait around to die. We are supposed to fight, kill and fornicate. Tempt fate more and more with each passing year…and just as we start to become weaker and older a younger Alpha kills us and takes our place.

Yes, this is what I want, this is what I WILL have.

Complete UFC 84 event coverage

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=6340&zoneid=13

UFC 84 features eleven fights headlined by two of the best lightweight fighters in the world, B.J. Penn and Sean Sherk. Penn is trying to solidify a legacy, while Sherk is looking for redemption.

It's a match up of the former champion against the current champion, but what makes the fight special is they're both top-ranked fighters competing against each other in their primes, something that doesn't happen often enough.

There are two light heavyweight bouts with a lot of implications on the UFC 84 card. Keith Jardine returns to the Octagon for the first time since defeating Chuck Liddell at UFC 76 taking on the former Pride middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva. With a win, Jardine moves into the title picture, while Silva looks to rebound after losing his last three fights.

Undefeated Lyoto Machida and former UFC light heavyweight titleholder Tito Ortiz clash in what Ortiz claims will be his final fight with the organization that has employed him for the past eleven years. Machida looks to keep his flawless record intact, while Ortiz wants to leave the organization with a win to strengthen his market value, as he becomes a free agent.

Sokoudjou is ready for Nakamura

Props: NBCSports.com

Quoteworthy:

“I pretty much choked in the cage [against Lyoto Machida]. Every time you lose you want to fix what doesn’t work…. I was a little bit surprised on the ground. He was mainly a karate guy…. I didn’t do what I was supposed to do. Pretty much things didn’t go my way…. The key part is to go in and fight your fight. Mentally as a fighter I have to be ready…. I know [Kazuhiro Nakamura] an experienced fighter, well-rounded and a judo player…. Of course, every time you lose you want to fix what doesn’t work.”

“The African Assassin” is out for redemption after “choking” (figuratively and literally) in his Octagon debut against Lyoto Machida at UFC 79: “Nemesis” back in December 2007. Prior to the loss the Camaroonian was on fire, bursting on to the scene overseas in Japan with two sensational knockouts of top 205-pound fighters, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona. He takes on Kazuhiro Nakamura on the under card this weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, at UFC 84: “Ill Will.”

Wanderlei is predicting the KO

Here is the article from mmaweekly. http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=6320&zoneid=2

When Wanderlei Silva steps into the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 84 against Keith Jardine, it will mark the first time in his decorated, 40-fight mixed martial arts career that he will be coming off of three losses in-a-row. He not only predicts a win, but the former Pride middleweight champion also thinks his fight with Jardine will be Fight of the Night.

Silva returned to the Octagon at UFC 79 against Chuck Liddell after spending seven years competing in Japan. Before the bout with Liddell, his last match in the Ultimate Fighting Championship was in 2000 at UFC 25 where he lost a hard-fought decision to Tito Ortiz.

Asked about his return to the UFC, Silva said, "It was a great opportunity for me. Dana White talked to me. He gave me a good opponent for me. He has good fighters. He gave me, first, Chuck (Liddell), who is the best name here. And second they give me Jardine, who is a good guy. He likes to give a show for the fans too."

Discussing the sharp contrast in audience response between competing in Japan and fighting in the U.S., Silva stated, "Fighting here is much different than fighting in Japan because in Japan the people are much quieter. Here, the fans give you too much energy, too much crowd. I love it. I love the emotion."

Silva sees the bout with Jardine as not only an opportunity to compete against top competition, but also a path back to fighting for a title. "He's a very tough guy. He's got good kicks, good punches. He's good on the ground. He's strong and has good heart. He's a good opponent. It's great to fight him because it's possible that I fight with the best names in the world," the Brazilian born fighter told MMAWeekly SoundOff Radio. "He's a great fighter. It's a very, very good opportunity for me to come back and to come back and fight for the title in the future."

Silva admitted to not knowing much about Jardine before sitting in attendance for UFC 76 and witnessing the Greg Jackson-trained fighter upset Chuck Liddell by decision. "I had never seen his fights before, only his fight with Chuck," said Silva. "Now I've studied his game and looked at his fights. He has a good style. He's a very good striker, and I know he and I are going to give the best show of the night. When it comes to fighting, I not only want to win, I want to give, and now it's better because of the bonuses, fight of the night. I know we're going to put on the best fight of the night.

"He's a very dangerous guy and his kicks are very good. It's a great match, a very, very interesting fight. It makes for an interesting fight."

Silva expects to put on a memorable performance and finish Jardine. "I'm going to give a good show. I'm going to give my best, and I'm going to win," predicted the "Axe Murderer."

"I'm going to knock him out.” check out mmaweekly.com for more mma info

Wanderlei is looking past Keith Jardine

Wanderlei said that he has his eyes on Chuck Liddell and Rampage.

He even claimed that Rampage wouldnt look him in his eyes because he is so scared of him. I wanna see Rampage and Wanderlei in the cage, so we

need a win this weekend from Wanderlei. Check out the whole interview at:

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=6313&zoneid=2.

Rematches have become one of the most compelling storylines in all of mixed martial arts. From the trilogy of fights between Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture, to the fights featuring Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock, rematches mean big business in MMA.

Two potential rematches that seem almost certain to happen involve former Pride middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva. As he prepares for his upcoming bout at UFC 84 against Keith Jardine, he knows that fights with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Chuck Liddell may have new life down the road.

During his time with the Japanese promotion Pride, Silva defeated Jackson two separate times, finishing both fights with strikes and handing Rampage two of his more devastating losses. The Brazilian recently spoke to MMAWeekly Radio where he intimated that a third fight is definitely in order.

“Of course I want to fight him,” said Silva about another fight with Rampage. “Him and I are going to have to fight, maybe next year, or however I’m going to fight with him. I want to fight him in the Octagon, because I want to beat him here in the United States, in the Octagon.”

Never short on words, Rampage has rarely had nice things to say about Silva and the former Pride champion has taken notice.

“Guys don’t talk much (expletive) about me. The guy is talking a lot in interviews. I’ve looked at him many times at events, he don’t look at my eyes,” Silva commented. “He’s (saying), ‘Oh I’m not afraid of him,’ but he don’t look at my eyes.

“I don’t know what the problem is. They have a problem with me, come and talk to me, don’t talk on an interview. If I have a problem with some guy, I’m going to go talk and say, ‘hey man, I don’t like you.’ I talk to them (face to face).”

Despite two dominant victories over Jackson, Silva welcomes a third fight and says this time there won’t be much talking when the battle is over.

“The next time, I’m going to beat him here,” Silva stated with a fierce tone. “He won’t talk more about me never (again).”

In his return bout to the UFC, Silva lost a decision to former 205-pound king Chuck Liddell. The two legends put on a “Fight of the Year” performance and Silva is hopeful for another shot at that fight as well.

“I know I’m going to fight with him again,” he said about a rematch with Liddell. “Because the last fight was a great fight. It was a great honor to fight him, and he’s a great name too.”

Silva feels confident in his chances for a second go round.

“I want to fight with him again, and the next time I’m going to beat him.”

For the time being, he will finish out his training camp this week in preparation for his upcoming bout on May 24 with Keith Jardine at UFC 84.

Chris Leben is out of jail

leben

http://mmamania.com/2008/05/19/ufcs-chris-leben-released-early-from-jail-and-under-home-detention/

UFC fighter Chris Leben was released from the Clackamas County Jail in Portland, Oregon, early on May 15 after serving time behind bars for a probation violation stemming from an outstanding Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrest in 2005.

He was sentenced on May 8 to a 35-day bit with credit for time already served and was originally slated to go home on May 27. He will now finish his time under “home detention,” according to jail officials.

Here’s a snip from his MySpace.com administrator:

“Hello all, Chris has been released from jail over the weekend. This is all the information I have right now and I’ll be sure to update everyone on his resolved legal issues, immediate plans and the expected date of his next match after Chris gets everything organized. He thanks you again for your patience and understanding and Chris will be posting here as soon as he can.”

Leben turned himself in late last month with hopes that he would be able to clear up the charge and obtain a visa to fight Michael Bisping in London, England, on June 7. However, the sentence during the hearing on May 8 forced UFC officials to scrap the bout.

Jason Day was called on as a replacement for “The Crippler” because there clearly wasn’t enough time for him to prepare behind bars and get all the official paperwork in order to travel overseas.

Stay tuned for more details.

Tito predicts a win

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=6297&zoneid=13

Here is what Tito had to say yo MMAWeekly

The Huntington Beach Bad Boy," Tito Ortiz, completes his contractual obligation with the Ultimate Fighting Championship when he steps in the octagon at UFC 84 against Lyoto Machida. Ortiz spoke with MMAWeekly about his training, his focus and his match up with the undefeated Brazilian.

"I'm really healthy. I feel great. I feel really, really good," said Ortiz. "I'm excited about this fight. I'm very focused. This fight means the world to me. I'm not just fighting myself. I'm fighting for every one of those fans, the Tito Ortiz fans that support me."

As excited as Ortiz is for his showdown with Machida, it wasn't the fight he wanted for his final bout in the UFC. "It doesn't matter who I fight to me. In the beginning I thought the Rashad Evans deal was supposed to happen," said the former UFC light heavyweight champion. "They built it, it was going to happen, and that's what I expected. And I know a lot of fans expected that."

"The UFC has their own game plan. They have their own ideas of how they want to run things, and I turned it down at first, saying why would I want to fight Lyoto? There's no reason to. But then I just started going on, and I was like, I don't really care. Whoever you want me to fight, I'll fight. That's really what it came down to. No diss toward Lyoto. He's a great fighter, undefeated, but I thought they were building the Rashad Evans fight. I wanted to fight Rashad again because I thought I beat him the first time."

With the intention of leaving the UFC and shopping the market for the highest bidder following his UFC 84 bout, Ortiz doesn't feel any pressure going into his final UFC fight despite the added leverage a win would bring to his negotiating power with another organization.

"I have no pressure," said the California native. "This is like the same thing as when I fought Vitor Belfort. I have no pressure on me. I have nothing to lose. I have no contract left, so I have nothing to lose. There ain't nothing after this with the UFC for me. Finally I'm going to be free. I'm able to do what I want, I think. My hands are not going to be tied anymore. I'm not going to feel like I have a ball and chain on me."

He continued, "I really think I'm going to succeed after this fight, no matter what. In my mind, I know I'm going to win. There's no doubt in my mind, without a doubt. I know for a fact that I'm going to beat Lyoto Machida. He doesn't know it yet, but when the bell rings and the referee says, let's get it on, I'll be dumping him on his head, and he'll feel the real wrath of Tito Ortiz."

Once known for his conditioning and stamina, Ortiz hasn't lived up to his reputation in recent bouts, getting fatigued sometimes as early as the second round.

"I started camp four months prior to the fight. That's the first time I've started this early," Ortiz told MMAWeekly.com. I was really focused on getting my core strength very, very strong. My back is really strong. My stomach is really strong. You'll see at the weigh-ins how shredded I am. I'm in great shape."

"I've actually picked it up. I'm running four miles a day. I've never done that in my career, ever. I really think I've let a lot of my fans down by getting tired after the second round. I've never a person like that to get tired. I've always pushed full-force for five, five minute rounds. We're training six, six minute rounds with 30 seconds rests. I'm up here at altitude doing it, so I'm going to be ready for three, five minute rounds without a doubt."

"It just feels great to be able to train for once and be able to wrestle the way I used to wrestle, spar the way I used to spar, and not have to go through three days of training and have to take four days off," added Ortiz. "That was really, really bad. It was hindering my fighting style, I believe. I'm very focused, no injuries, and I'm able to focus my time on training."

Asked about the match up with Machida, Ortiz commented, "He's never faced anyone like me, ever. All the fights he's had have been against guys that stand back and let him do all the striking. Three words for Machida: feel the pressure. He's going to feel the pressure."

"Everybody knows how I fight. Lyoto knows how I fight, and let's see if he can handle the pressure. Let's see if he can handle 16,000 fans screaming. I know there's going to be about 16,000, probably 15,999 that will be screaming about Tito and there will be that one person that's hating on me. Let's see if he can handle the pressure."

Ortiz went on to boast, "It's my octagon. I've been doing it for eleven years. I'm very focused. I'm hungry. I have everything on the line right now, and nothing to lose. I have a lot of people to prove wrong. It's me versus the company."

"Expect fireworks on May 24, live on pay-per-view, when I beat down Lyoto Machida." Check out mmaweekly.com for more mma news

Check Liddell's hamstring update.

http://mmamania.com/2008/05/18/ufc-quick-quote-chuck-liddell-hamstring-injury-is-not-good/

“His injury’s not good. He can barely bend over and tie his shoe. He tore his leg real bad. It’s pretty nasty…. I know the doctor told him to kind of play it by ear. It’s one of those things that can heal in six days, or it could heal in 16 weeks. The doctor doesn’t really know. It depends on how fast Chuck can recover.”

– UFC President Dana White talks with FOXSports.com about the hamstring injury that Chuck Liddell recently sustained training for his fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 85: “Bedlam” in London, England, on June 7. He had to withdraw from the fight and there is no timetable for the return of the 39-year-old former light heavyweight champion. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua — who is also recovering from an injury — has encouraged “Iceman” to wait until he is 100 percent so the two can lock horns once and for all sometime in late 2008.

HdNet plans

hdnet

When Mark Cuban announced his intentions of promoting mixed martial arts, many people were excited about the possibilities the billionaire could bring to the sport.

Since the formation of HDNet Fights last year, the Dallas based organization has held two events. It's been five months since they've put on a show, but HDNet Fights CEO Andrew Simon told MMAWeekly they plan on putting together "super-fights" in the future.

HDNet started airing MMA with World Extreme Cagefighting, but has expanded their coverage to showing several regional events from around the country as well as Japanese promotions.

"We have the ability to partner with pretty much any organization out there," said Simon. "And when the timing is right, you're going to see us promote again some super-fights."

"We're going to be pretty opportunistic when we want to promote ourselves. We're in a little bit of a different position than everyone else. We have our own television network. We have our own arena in Dallas with the American Airlines Center, and we're not into it to just put on fights every month ourselves just because. I think you're going to see when we come back it will be a pretty big fight."

Simon continued, "When HDNet is the promoter, number one, it's going to be something pretty big. Congrats to the Affliction guys. They're putting on a pretty big show of big names coming up, and I think you'll see we'll do something similar, or bigger names as well. If we can partner with various organizations to do it as well, we will. There's no ego on our side. We have the ability, like I said, with our eight or nine partners to really work and bring the best fighters from a lot of organizations together."

The HDNet Fights CEO assured MMAWeekly that HDNet Fights is alive and well, stating, "We're looking forward to promoting our own events, and I think they'll be events that the fans want to see." check out mmaweekly.com for more mma news

Kimbo Slice vs Mike Tyson

Props: Gary Shaw

“I have the media report about Tyson.  I have had no discussions with Mike or anybody surrounding Mike.  I know Mike.  Yes, I would make that fight in a heartbeat…. For those that say things about Kimbo to me are haters because they should be cheer-leading him to lead the way and open more doors.  I don’t think MMA has had as much excitement the last few years as Kimbo is now bringing to the table…. Let me remind everyone on this call that nobody cared who Mike Tyson fought. If you asked someone what they were doing Saturday night, they would say they were going to see Tyson. They didn’t say Tyson against anybody. If he beat up on somebody that wasn’t as good as him, people would say he’s the baddest man on the planet. Some of the questions on this call are about an aging Tyson who got knocked out in his last fight. But it’s still the aura of Tyson. That’s what Kimbo Slice brings. I’m proud to promote him and proud to know him.  I’m proud to call him a friend. Everybody should be cheer-leading Kimbo because he is a reason, not the only reason, but a reason that CBS really looked up. The logo of CBS, that eye, they put that eye right on Kimbo Slice.”

Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw refutes recent claims in a conference call yesterday that a fight between Kimbo Slice and 41-year-old former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is in the works. Slice has always talked about wanting to fight “Iron Mike;” however, he is way passed his prime and incredibly out of shape. Regardless, the return of Tyson would more than likely generate a ton of public interest (as always), especially if he’s matched up against a personality such as Slice. It’s for that reason that Shaw would book the fight in a “heartbeat.” It would be a complete sideshow … but a money-making sideshow at that. Slice has to first take care of James Thompson at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on May 31 during the network television debut of live mixed martial arts action o

Antonio Nogueria- a real class act

Here is what Nogueria had to say.

“I have a couple more years in me to fight. I just don’t want to break somebody’s face. It was a dream to me also to make the academy, form a team and teach. I had something to do in my life and God gave me a second chance after the accident. I show I have heart. I keep coming back. I don’t think only of myself. I think about this sport and show people what we are all about. I have a lot of things to show.”

– UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira shares his passion for mixed martial arts in a recent interview with the Sun-Sentinel. “Big Nog” talks about the childhood accident that has helped propel him to the top of sport and has helped him achieve his dream of opening up a gym — Nogueira and Silva Mixed Martial Arts Academy, which is set to open this weekend in Miami, Fla. His partner in the venture is none other that UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Nogueira will have a lot of time to train in the facility for his upcoming stint as coach on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 and eventual showdown with Frank Mir on New Year’s Eve weekend in December 2008. go to mmamania for more mma information

Dreams and Elite Xc teaming up

It was announced at the press conference this past weekend for DREAM 3 that Pro Elite — the parent company of Elite XC — and DREAM have agreed to an alliance, if you will, and will work together to co-promote future events.

This news perhaps won’t come as a surprise to most fans. Either because it was announced last week, or because we just saw three of Elite XC’s biggest stars (Nick Diaz, Mayhem Miller and Eddie Alvarez) fight on the DREAM 3 card.

Here’s a snip from ProElite executive William Kelly at the press conference via MMAWeekly.com:

“In the last year ProElite and EliteXC and other brands have made a lot of progress, and some of our progress is due in part to our relationship with FEG and now with Dream. We are sharing fighters. We are sharing referees. We intend to do co-promotions with Dream both in Japan and in the U.S.”

This appears to be a win-win situation for both organizations. Elite XC gets more world class-caliber fighters to put together better match ups with its already growing cast of stars. And DREAM will get to possibly leverage Elite XC’s television deals with CBS and Showtime as a platform to develop a bigger fan base in the United States and beyond.

There’s already talk about Nick Diaz fighting for the DREAM welterweight belt against Mach Sakurai, we all know how well Eddie Alvarez is doing in the lightweight grand prix, and Mayhem Miller put on a show for the Japanese faithful at DREAM 3 — he’ll certainly be a crowd favorite over there.

Putting on my matchmaker cap for a minute, here’s sort of a fantasy lineup of what an Elite XC and DREAM co-promoted event could look like:

Kimbo Slice vs. Mirko Cro Cop
Nick Diaz vs. Mach Sakurai
Denis Kang vs. Mayhem Miller II
Paul Daley vs. Joachim Hansen
Eddie Alvarez vs. JZ Calvancante
Sakaraba vs. Frank Shamrock
Jake Shields vs. Shinya Aoki (catchweight)
Jacare Souza vs. Ninja Rua
Yves Edwards vs. Caol Uno II

That was fun, but as you can see the possibilities (or is it fantasies?) are endless. Kudos to both organizations for joining forces — it should be great for the fans and the sport. Check out mmamania.com for more mma information

Nick Diaz vs Mach Sakurai

diaz

Nick Diaz (16-7) will fight Hayato “Mach” Sakurai (32-8-2) for the first-ever DREAM welterweight title at the Osakajo Hall in Osaka, Japan, on July  21, accordingly to MMAWeekly.com.

Diaz earned the right to challenge for the vacant strap with a first round technical knockout of Katsuya Inoue at DREAM 3 this past weekend. It was a fight that almost scrapped but was given the green light at the last minute by ProElite officials, which turned out to be a wise decision in hindsight.

He is healthy enough to challenge Muhsin Corbbrey at the Elite XC show slated for the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, on June 14 (a cause for alarm prior to the fight) and he is a possible star in the making overseas — Diaz was involved in a sensational bout with Takanori Gomi … something more than likely still fresh in the minds of Japanese MMA fans.

Sakurai, on the other hand, is coming of a surprise submission loss to David Baron at Shooto: “Tradition 1″ earlier this month. “Mach” — who was recently courted  by the UFC to no avail — has already competed under the DREAM banner, defeating Hidetaka Monma via technical knockout in the inaugural event back in March.

This should be an extremely exciting fight, which will punctuate the finals of the 2008 Dream Lightweight Grand Prix … what a night for mixed martial arts it is shaping up to be.

Alexander Emelianenko and Paul Buentello are added to the affliction card

alex

Former UFC heavyweight Paul Buentello (22–10) is rumored to be fighting Aleksander Emelianenko (13-3), former PRIDE heavyweight and little brother of Aflliction headliner Fedor Emelianenko, according to MMAWeekly.

Buentello, who is an accomplished mixed martial artist, has recently been mixing it up with other non-UFC heavyweights over in Strikeforce. Since losing to then UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski (10-5) at UFC 55 in 15 seconds of round one due to knockout, Buentello has been an impressive 4-1.

In fact, he’s 10-2 since 2003.

“The Headhunter” has his work cut out for him however against Emelianenko. Aside from having dangerous hands, Emelianenko has a vast array of submission moves and like his brother, has a history of success in Combat Sambo.

Emelianenko is on a four-fight winning streak, having last stopped Silvao Santos at M-1 Challenge via TKO back in April.

Affliction — one of the most recognized and popular clothing brands out right now — made its bid to become the latest mixed martial arts promoter official earlier this month during an episode of “Inside MMA” on the HDNet network.

It’s been known for some time now that Affliction would throw its hat into the MMA ring. In fact, the UFC and Elite XC recently banned their fighters from wearing Affliction gear during events because of the looming competition.

And if the proposed inaugural pay-per-view (PPV) fight card slated for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on July 19 is any indication of things to come, then Affliction will indeed pose some stiff competition.

Here’s what we can expect thus far:

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia
Josh Barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo

Paul Buentello vs. Aleksander Emelianenko
Matt Lindland vs. Fabio Negao
Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Mike Whitehead
Ben Rothwell vs. TBA

That’s one hell of a star-studded line up … and there’s more than likely still more to come.

Stay tuned.
